Drahonice Prison

Revolution of the Everyday is a five-month artistic project by the Institute of Unfreedom, developed together with women serving prison sentences in Drahonice. It asks what room for choice remains in an environment where much of everyday life is determined by rules, routines and decisions made by others.

Here, revolution is not understood as a grand gesture. It happens through small shifts: in the possibility of deciding how to appear, how to speak, how to move, what role to take on, or how to reshape an ordinary situation.

The project began with identity and self-representation. Participants created alter egos, names, characters, photographs, texts and audio recordings. Individual work gradually moved towards the group and expanded into voice, rap, rhythm, masks, costumes, movement and choreography. The initial framework remained open and changed according to what the participants themselves brought into the process.

One of the central lines was voice and sound. Spoken word, whispering, clapping, stamping and rhythm developed into original texts and rap created together with Arleta and mdmx. The sonic and musical layer of the project was further developed in collaboration with Atlaskin and VNUKK. The aim was not to “give women a voice”, but to create a space in which voices that already exist could be heard on their own terms.

Another part of the project focused on everyday rituals. Birthdays, weddings, Christmas and funerals were broken down into gestures, sounds, objects and familiar situations. This process resulted in the four-part video series WISH FOR WHATEVER YOU WANT, moving between personal experience, humour, absurdity and the reconstruction of familiar rituals.

Gradually, a shared visual identity emerged: white masks, long black garments and the KLAN. Individual identities temporarily formed a collective body without disappearing within it. Movement was built from simple actions — walking, stopping, forming lines and circles, repetition and shared rhythm.

The visual and moving-image layer was developed together with Matěj Zet, whose camera became an active part of how the collective situations, choreography and procession were composed. In Libyně, the different layers of the project came together in front of the camera as a shared moving image.

Photography, sound, rap, masks, movement and video did not develop as separate outputs. Together they formed a shared visual and sonic language that culminated in the public event KLAN 404.

KLAN 404 took place on 23 September 2026 at Bike Jesus in Prague. A process that had largely developed inside the prison entered public space together with its authors. The evening combined live performance, video, rap, music, projections, masks, photographs and discussion, including a DJ set by VNUKK and Atlaskin.

The number 404 refers to what cannot be found — to voices, images and experiences that are often absent from public space or represented by someone else. KLAN 404 reverses this position: the women are not merely the subject of the project or an image on a screen, but its co-authors and active participants.

Revolution of the Everyday moves between “I” and “we” — between individual identity and the group, a personal voice and a shared rhythm, between an everyday life defined by rules and the possibility of creating one’s own order within it.

The project was initiated by Lenka Tyrpeklová and Daniela Voráčková within the Institute of Unfreedom and forms part of Lenka Tyrpeklová’s doctoral research project (Re)construction of (Un)freedom at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague.
